How to Choose a Mover
There are many moving companies who are in competition for your business. Many companies will provide a variety of services, depending on what your needs are. Before choosing a mover, talk to several companies in order to determine if they can provide the service(s) you will need. Also, you will want to compare services and prices before choosing a moving company. One good source for finding a mover are recommendations from people who have used the company in the past. Another good source is to check with local realtors, the Better Business Bureau or other consumer organizations in your local area. One consumer group, Relocation Portal Group does not recommend moving companies, or rate one moving company over another. Once you have determined several potential moving companies, compare the services they offer, the prices and make sure to review their estimates in detail. This will help you determine which mover best suits your needs and budget.
If you are moving interstate, you should read and understand all of the information you will receive. In addition to brochures explaining their various services, moving companies should give you a copy of a consumer booklet entitled Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move and information regarding the mover's participation in a Dispute Settlement Program. Distribution of the consumer booklet and the requirement that movers offer shippers neutral arbitration as a means of settling disputes that may arise concerning loss or damage on household goods shipments are requirements of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and formerly, the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Once you have decided on a mover, make arrangements with the movers and book the job well in advance; at least four to six weeks before the moving date. At this point, make sure that you have thoroughly reviewed the estimate and that you completely understand the rates ad charges as well as what the mover’s liability will be for moving your belongings. Also, you will want to ensure that the movers have adequate insurance, as well as determine what claims protection you will have in the event of a loss.
When you choose your mover, be sure you understand: The rates and charges that will apply. The mover's liability for your belongings. How pickup and delivery will work. What claims protection you have.
